Putting the B in BLING

My last post on Tribute's FAB-ulous jewelry lead me
to examine the other gems Barbie's sportin' these days.

Barbie's got some serious jewelry in her arsenal:
one wicked bracelet

Aphrodite's water-inspired accessories

Joan's infamous pen necklace

Some serious bling- easily 15 carats.

Oh yes, those are Hard Rock Cafe dog tags.

Hello, GORGEOUS!!!

Well, this has got to be the most fabulous doll EVER.
She came to my house on Christmas morning,
and after I fixed her insane beehive and weird stripes of hair glued
to each side of her face,
she was UH-MAY-ZING!!!
How dramatic is that cat-eye swipe of eyeliner?
How cool are those earrings!!

"Tribute" Barbie was released this year to commemorate 10 years of the Barbie Fashion Model Collection--a specialty collection of Barbies featuring the unique "Silkstone" material with a fresh take on the vintage facemold.
Her dress is a crazy confection of frothy blue layers...I hope it calms down.
The crystals, sequins, and gold stitching details are awesome!

Christmas is the best excuse to add a doll like this to my collection!

Fabulous Fashions

This doll is modeling an actual vintage fashion that I found
at a doll show a few months ago.
It is in pretty decent shape, considering it is close to 50 years old.
It did have a rip in the back, and a couple fraying ribbons on the front,
but I sewed it up and updated the look with a belt.
I got this leopard-print sheath for Christmas during a gift exchange:
This is a sheath in the Dressmaker Details collection,
made by Masterstroke Canada. They are famous for creating limited-edition,
high-quality, high-fashion clothes for dolls.
Check out the tiny zipper sewn into this fully-lined dress!!
Mattel doesn't make stuff like this.

Re-dressed Rules!

It's pretty rare that a doll and outfit come together in perfect harmony.
Most of the time, I will be wild about a doll and hate the outfit, or love the outfit
and want to toss the doll out the window.
When that happens, I take matters into my own hands.

Take, for example, the ridiculous gimmicky getup on this one:
Riiiiiiight, because as the fashion icon of the world, Barbie should TOTALLY be wearing a dress paying homage to the famous landmark in London that features ACTUAL MOVING HANDS OF A CLOCK.

Ahem. That's better.

This outfit is a mishmash of different pieces I had lying around.
I love the mysterious giant hat that nobody would ever wear!

It's got a "Park Avenue" feel to it.
Hmm, I should have given her a little poodle to complete the look.
You may recognize this doll from an earlier post. She came in a boring black dress that washed out her complexion. She is rockin' this dress, though! I got this crystal-studded dress from a REALLY ugly doll.

But the black dress found a new model...one who wears it like a true diva. This doll is still wearing the original dress she came in, but it is so '80s!
I haven't decided what to do with her just yet. But what a gorgeous face!

Redecorating

You know it's bad when a big package arrives at your house looking like this:
Or this:

Or this.So it seems like somewhat of a miracle when the contents
turn out to be undamaged bookcases for my office.
I put these babies together myself.
I may be a doll collector, but I know my way around a power drill.
I unpacked my collection after a 4-month hiatus.

I will probably be donating some dolls to Goodwill
or trading with other members to thin down my collection
to just the ones that I really enjoy. Quality over quantity!
I finally get to use this display case again, yeah!
This print was given to my for my birthday,
and is sooo gorgeous and HUGE in person.
And it's totally okay with me that the frame doesn't match the other one.
Woo-hoo, I got to unpack the doll closet, too!

I still have somewhere in the ballpark of 230+ dolls and/or fashions.
There are a few boxes of dolls packed up that I might
be trading, selling or donating at some point.
For now, I like having the breathing room.

A Stunning Discovery

Mattel released "Stunning in the Spotlight," a Silkstone** Barbie
last year for the horrendous price of $161.
Needless to say, I did not immediately run out and purchase this doll.
No- I scoured every website out there trying to find a price I could stand to pay.
No such price was to be found in the 18 months I have been looking.
Until.
I stopped into a shabby and neglected-looking Tuesday Morning store this week just to see if MAYBE there was some buried treasure, because every once in awhile I have found Barbie bargains there.

Unbelievably, this doll was just sitting there on a dusty shelf in a somewhat scuffed and dirty box. But the doll itself was untouched and perfect. AND it was half price! Still expensive, but that's what gift cards and birthday money are for!
The thing I like most about this doll is her unusual coloring- pale skin, dark eyes, light hair. Remind you of anyone?!?!
(These are pictures taken by another collector, fyi.)
In case the doll looks familiar to Mom, it's because the Silkstone doll is designed to pay homage to this doll, "Solo in the Spotlight," released in the early 60s.
It was part of Barbie's 50th birthday last year.

** Silkstone is a special material used by Mattel that has the look, feel, and weight of porcelain. Their clothing and accessories are generally of better quality and design. Silkstone dolls are substantially more expensive than regular collectible vinyl dolls.

Barbie and Birthdays

It's pretty much been established that Barbies make great birthday presents.
This birthday was no exception: Jeremy gave me Couture Angel Barbie.

I also received a gorgeous limited edition print of a Silkstone Barbie
and will post later once it is framed and on display in my office.
Stay tuned, Barbie fans!
